What the CDMP Measures
The CDMP is built on the DMBOK, the reference framework that defines the knowledge areas of Data Management — data governance, data architecture, data modelling and design, data quality, metadata, master and reference data, data integration, storage, security and more. Rather than testing one tool or platform, the CDMP checks that you understand how these areas work and fit together, which is why it is recognised across industries and countries.
The Certification Levels
Every CDMP candidate takes the same starting point, the CDMP Fundamentals exam — 100 multiple-choice questions drawn from across the DMBOK, in a 90-minute exam (with extra time available for English-second-language candidates). Your score on that exam, together with specialist exams, determines your level:
- Associate — awarded on the Fundamentals exam alone, the entry point for those newer to the profession.
- Practitioner — a stronger Fundamentals result plus two specialist exams in chosen knowledge areas, reflecting several years of practical experience.
- Master — the highest examined level: a top Fundamentals result plus two specialist exams at the highest threshold, for senior, deeply experienced practitioners.
Specialist exams are available in areas such as Data Governance, Data Quality, Data Modelling & Design, Metadata Management and Master & Reference Data — so you can certify in the areas that match your work. Why It’s Worth It
For individuals, the CDMP is portable proof of Data Management competence that employers and clients recognise. For organisations, having certified people raises the standard of data work and gives a shared vocabulary rooted in the DMBOK. It is one of the few credentials that spans the whole discipline rather than a single niche.
